About

Hi, I’m Sarah, Director at Wound Healing Solutions. I’ve specialised in wound healing since 2004 within the NHS, academia and industry. My passion and focus is for improving the management of patients with wounds.

I graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1999, developing my interest in wounds working in surgery and critical care. I began specialising in wound management while working as a community nurse, completing my MSc in Wound Healing & Tissue Repair at Cardiff University in 2008, and where I am now an Honorary Lecturer.

My career evolved after joining the world-renowned Wound Healing Research Unit in Cardiff as a specialist research nurse coordinating designated clinical commercial and academic trials and growing my knowledge around clinical trial monitoring, liaising regularly with CRA companies and sponsors to ensure compliance with GCP guidelines.

I gained invaluable clinical knowledge, skills and experience during this time, working under internationally renowned clinicians and academics to grow my expertise and becoming particularly interested in lower limb and diabetic foot ulceration and the impact of pain and quality of life. My MSc dissertation focused on the hidden burden of DFU pain which was published, presented internationally and won a Wounds UK Innovations award in 2011.

In 2014 I moved to industry as a clinical services manager and clinical specialist for several wound management companies, leading on clinical strategy and projects and providing clinical input for new product development and compliance with Medical Device Regulations.

I later became the Clinical Research Director at the Welsh Wound Innovation Centre, a not-for-profit company focused on tackling challenges with non-healing wounds, managing the clinical research portfolio from set up of trials through to dissemination. I acted as the CRO for an international multi-centre RCT and as Principal Investigator for several studies.

I have always enjoyed teaching and believe education in wound management is vitally important to ensure delivery of safe, effective and evidence-based care across all settings. I have published widely and have extensive experience with presenting nationally and internationally.

I have broad clinical experience across complex wound management and of performing audits to improve quality of clinical practice, winning a European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel Quality Improvement Award in 2018.

My developing interest is around using Patient-Reported Outcome and Experience Measures to improve the quality of wound services and am currently researching this for my doctorate. I am passionate about demonstrating the value of and improving patient access to wound-related research. I am also honoured to be a Trustee of the Society of Tissue Viability.

As Director of Wound Healing Solutions, I offer expert advice, teaching and support in wound management and research to improve outcomes and quality of life for patients with wounds.
